EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR, discovered by Francine Shapiro in 1989, has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and negative beliefs. By utilizing the brain’s natural healing processes, EMDR therapy quickly heals many emotional problems and conditions which have been difficult and time consuming to treat in the past:

• Anxiety / Panic Attacks

• Depression

• Complicated Grief

• Phobias

• Performance Anxiety

• Dissociative Disorders

• Addictions / Substance Abuse

• PTSD

• Sexual / Physical Abuse

• Disturbing Memories

• Pain Disorders

• Body Image Issues

• Personality Disorders

The goal of EMDR therapy is to reprocess disturbing memories that have unconscious, lingering effects on current situations. By reprocessing old wounds, clients spontaneously develop more adaptive coping mechanisms. Thought to mimick REM (rapid eye movement) sleep stage where we’re processing information while we rest, EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation (created by eye movements, alternating sounds or tapping) by activating both sides of the brain, allowing the brain to release and redefine emotional experiences that are “trapped” within the brain. As the brain arrives at new conclusions, the original trauma no longer contains the negative emotional charge originally associated with it.
